90 % of paper pulp is made of wood. Paper production accounts for about 35% of cut trees. The earth’s lungs are weakening. I was always in favour of recycling, even before it was introduced in Cyprus. When it arrived to the island I encouraged my family and friends to recycle. It has no cost; it is just a habit and most of all I see it as my contribution to a good cause. So when I joined PeopleAchieve in November 2007, I felt that I should expand my circle of recycling influence. Since I was new to the company I hesitated but watching the bins full of paper I felt angry with myself for not doing something about it. I suggested it to the Office Manager who gladly agreed. Extra bins were bought and paper recycling was introduced during our Team Meeting. The whole team welcomed it. At first my colleagues were coming to me, holding any kind of paper asking whether it could be recycled. Seven months later, everybody has the red recycling bin next to the usual waste bin and I am so happy to see it full, feeling proud of us because we made it happen. We take the paper to the recycling spot ourselves, every two weeks. In a few months Green Dot will be making it even easier since they will be collecting the paper from our office. If we can do it, everybody can do it. It is not difficult and at the end of the day it makes us feel less guilty about slowly destroying our forests; our planet. It’s estimated that recycling half the world’s paper would avoid the harvesting of 80,000 km² of forestland. Do we need more than that to start paper recycling?
