HOW HEALTHY IS YOUR COMPANY CULTURE? 30 Oct 2007

“Culture”; a term heard very frequently in company corridors these days. But what is it about Culture that has made so many of today’s successful companies invest so much of their time (and money) in improving their corporate culture? The answer is simple: “they have seen the benefits”.

But lets start with a brief explanation of what company culture is. Its all about the way we think, behave towards our colleagues, react to challenges and problems, manage our staff; its about the way we do business. It is similar to the culture of a country only applied to a company rather than to a country.

Why concern yourself with Culture?
In today’s business environment, it is not enough to continuously improve your products and systems to ensure continued future success. The ever increasing competition is forcing organisations (and therefore people) to operate closer to their limits than before. Organisations have now realised the impact that their culture can have on their future success. Culture is now recognised as the foundation of staff performance which in turn, will deliver company performance.

So, you’re convinced, but “how do we do it”, I hear you ask?
Well, for a start, there is no quick fix. Improving your company culture is a long term process, depending on company size, your current culture and many other factors. It is a process that requires commitment and effort by all in the company and needs to be given the attention and consideration associated with other strategic issues. Easy, it is not. However, succeed, and the sky is the limit. No wonder so many of the world’s most successful companies are doing it. We have helped several of these which through our knowledge and experience in the field, have succeeded. The Culture Process consists of a series of steps (see diagram), each having specific objectives and deliverables.

The Result?
Imagine a company environment where people work with their hearts and continuously try to deliver their best. A competitive advantage that cannot be copied easily.
