PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL TIPS FOR HIGHER ACHIEVEMENTS 12 Jan 2006
  • Preparation
    Agree on the time and place of the appraisal, with appraisee
    Clarify your view of the performance
    Clarify what you want the person to achieve
    Clarify available support (practical, emotional, financial)
    Plan how to give positive & negative feedback
    Prepare a Checklist

 

  • During the Appraisal
    Create a positive environment in the first few minutes
    Use non-confrontational seating
    Be realxed
    Break the ice with some social talk
    Maintain eye contact
    Give your full attention
    Focus on the appraisee's strengths for 60% of the time
    Discuss what the appraisse has done well, what they can do better & how
    Review previous goals and what has been achieved
    Using questions, allow appraisee to learn what prevented the realisation of goals that have not been achieved
    Focus on postive solutions to problems, the past cannot be changed
    Use questions
    Allow the appraisee to talk
    Clarify understanding
    Offer support
    Plan future meetings
    Finish in a positive way

    Comment on early successes
    Ask about progress
