GOLF & BUSINESS 12 Sep 2005

Golf and Business have long been happy bedfellows and with a moment’s thought it’s easy to understand why the golf course is such a convenient place to meet and discuss commerce as well as the pleasures of golf as a game.

All kinds of business have allegedly been carried out on the course, ranging from sales of vintage cars and art through to hard-nosed business deals, mergers and acquisitions.  Realistically, there are plenty of business meetings that include a round of golf, but the biggest deals are confidential, so you seldom find them being clearly attributed to golf.

But golf’s prestige and the exclusivity of the game means that joining a club gives advantages that go beyond simply accessing the courses.  Meeting like-minded individuals who share ambitions, wealth, and power can be a short cut to getting things done.  A quiet word in a relaxed setting can often achieve more than any number of meetings in the corridors of power.  And perhaps “quiet” has something to do with it too, for the open spaces and privacy of the course allows sensitive subjects to be discussed with the minimum chance of being overheard.

Travelling along the cart paths in the comfort of the buggy through beautiful scenery and a cool breeze blowing in your face also allows you to think big, frees the mind from the daily detail that gets in the way of the vision and the chance to create something really inspiring and different.

The game itself is reassuringly tricky too.  There’s the choice of the club, the swing, the stance, the ball, the tricky pin location, and of course where to play.  In Cyprus there is a choice of three golf courses all in Paphos, the oldest being Tsada followed by Secret Valley and the newest and best golf course, also ranked as one of Europe’s finest courses is Aphrodite Hills, which you can view at  www.aphroditehills.com.
